Acoustic Ratings Explained: What STC Actually Means for Your Conference Room

STC comes up in almost every conversation we have about conference rooms and private offices, and it's one of the most misunderstood specs in the entire glass wall category. Here's what the number actually means and how to use it to make a real decision.

What STC measures

Sound Transmission Class is a single number rating how much a partition reduces airborne sound passing through it. Higher numbers mean better sound blocking. It's a laboratory rating based on how the assembly performs across a range of frequencies, not a measurement of your specific room.

What the numbers actually mean in practice

At lower STC ratings, loud speech is audible and largely understandable through the wall. In the mid-40s, loud speech is audible but mostly not understandable. At STC 50 and above, most speech becomes inaudible under normal conditions, which is the range most offices target for confidential conversation privacy. These are general guidelines, not guarantees, since real-world performance depends heavily on installation quality.

Why the rating only matters if the installation is right

A glass assembly's STC rating is tested under ideal lab conditions: sealed edges, no gaps, a complete enclosure. In a real building, the rating only holds if the wall is sealed properly at every edge, including the floor and ceiling connection, and if the wall actually runs to the structural deck above rather than stopping at a suspended ceiling. Skip either of those details and the published rating won't match what you experience in the room.

What actually achieves higher STC ratings

Double glazed panels, two layers of glass with a sealed air gap, perform significantly better than a single pane of the same total thickness, since the air gap interrupts the sound transmission path. Laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer is another path to higher performance. Simply using thicker single-pane glass helps less than people expect, since a single rigid surface transmits sound efficiently regardless of how thick it is.

How to use this when speccing a room

Decide what's actually happening in the room. A standard internal meeting room might be fine in the STC 40s. A room used for confidential client conversations, HR discussions, or anything legally sensitive should target STC 50 or higher, with attention paid to plenum sealing and door gasketing, not just the glass spec on paper.
